Best Hiking Daypacks

The Persist is built around durability rather than weight: a 900D ripstop lower panel over a 300D upper, which OutdoorGearLab singles out as best-in-class durability. At 50.2 oz it is one of the heaviest daypacks here, and deliberately so.

The Speed Lite is Deuter's minimalist end: 470 g for 21 L, frameless, with a detachable waist belt. It is less than half the weight of the Futura 21 SL at the same volume, and the trade is ventilation and load capacity -- the foam panel sits against the back and the pack is rated to just 5 kg.

The Sportlite is Osprey's lightweight day-hiking line, refreshed for spring 2026 with a wider size run. At 2.25 lb for 25 L it uses a 210D recycled nylon ripstop and an AirScape foam panel on a framesheet rather than a wire frame and mesh. The 15, 20 and 22 L sizes use a fixed unisex harness; the 25 and 30 L add five inches of torso adjustment.

The Batac is one of the lightest daypacks on this site and one of the cheapest packs: 12 oz for 16 L at $70, made from remnant fabric with the colourway chosen by Cotopaxi, which is why no two are quite the same colour. It packs down to almost nothing.

The Hikelite 26 is Osprey's value ventilation play — a suspended-mesh trampoline back and included raincover at $135, undercutting its own Stratos 24 by $65 and more than a pound. It's the budget answer for sweaty-back day hikers.

The Daylite Plus is Osprey's everywhere bag — a 20-liter that splits time between easy trails, commutes, and travel, with a laptop-compatible sleeve and attachment points for Osprey travel packs. It's the most-owned Osprey, period.

The Tempest is the women's-fit Talon and Osprey's technical daypack. The 2025 redesign moved the line to an AirScape ridged-foam backpanel that sits against the back rather than a suspended mesh, which keeps the load close and stable for scrambling at the cost of some airflow. It runs from 11 to 44 L.

The Distance 15 is Black Diamond's fast-and-light vest pack, using a Dynex-blended shell for tear resistance at 11.6 oz. It is built for running and fast alpine days rather than general hiking, which is why it costs $200 for 15 L.

The Traverse 35 is one of the largest daypacks in this comparison and crosses into overnight territory. A 400D recycled shell over 210D ripstop makes it durable, and at 52 oz it is also one of the heaviest packs in the daypack group.

The Talon 22 is the best-selling hiking daypack of its generation — a do-everything 22-liter with an adjustable torso, wrap-around harness, and enough attachment points for trekking poles, helmets, and ice axes. The women's version is the Tempest 22.

The Stratos 24 is the Talon's ventilated sibling — a full suspended-mesh AirSpeed back panel, a real perimeter frame, and an included raincover in a 24-liter day hiker. The women's version is the Sirrus 24.

The Sirrus is the women's-fit Stratos and the ventilated counterpart to the Tempest: a suspended AirSpeed mesh panel rather than contact foam, plus an included rain cover and a heavier 100D x 210D honeycomb shell over a 420D base. It is the day pack in Osprey's women's line for hot weather and long days.

The Citro is Gregory's hydration day pack and ships with a 3 L reservoir included. At 2.0 lb it is lighter than Osprey's equivalent Manta 24 by well over a pound, and $30 cheaper, while bundling a larger bladder.

The women's-fit Citro: 1.93 lb with a 3 L reservoir included and a 420D reinforced base, at $180. It matches the men's Citro on price while weighing marginally less and adding a tougher base fabric.

The Zulu 30 is Gregory's big day-hiker and light-overnighter, pairing a ventilated FreeFloat suspended mesh back with a pivoting hipbelt and an adjustable torso. The women's version is the Jade 28.

The Manta is Osprey's hydration-specific hiking pack and ships with a 2.5 L Hydraulics LT reservoir, a magnetic bite-valve attachment on the sternum strap and a dedicated reservoir sleeve. It uses the same AirSpeed suspended mesh as the Stratos, so the price covers both the suspension and the bladder.

The Trail 25 is REI's basic day pack and the sensible default for most day hiking: $100, 25 L, 210D ripstop, and nothing clever. It sits between the Flash 22's minimalism and the Traverse 35's capacity.

The Flash 22 is REI's cult-classic minimalist daypack — 14 ounces, $60, and endlessly recommended as the summit pack, travel stuffable, and errand bag that happens to hike well. The removable back pad doubles as a sit pad.

The Aerios 18 uses Arc'teryx's AeroForm thermoformed back panel, which is moulded to hold its shape rather than relying on foam. Combined with Arc'teryx's Hadron grid fabric, a nylon woven with liquid-crystal polymer fibre, it is the most technically constructed small pack on this site.

The Jade is the women's counterpart to the Zulu day line, at 28 L and built on the same 400D polyester ripstop and suspended ventilated panel. It sits between a day pack and a light overnight carry.

The Terravia is Patagonia's hiking daypack line, built from 100% recycled nylon ripstop in a Fair Trade Certified factory. At 1 lb 9.6 oz for 28 L it is among the lighter packs at this volume, and the 36 L roll-top version adds an internal frame for heavier loads.

The Fourteener 26 is CamelBak's flagship hiking pack, built around its 3-liter Crux reservoir (included) and an Air Support ventilated back. It's the hydration-first choice — buy it because you drink from a hose, not a bottle.

The Speed Lite Pro takes the Speed Lite's weight target and adds a vest-style harness: perforated shoulder straps with pockets, hip fin pockets, and a LiteAir skeleton structure that restores load capacity to 10 kg. At 680 g for 25 L it is the closest thing in Deuter's range to a fastpacking pack.

The Futura is Deuter's ventilated day pack and the smallest application of the Aircomfort suspended mesh used on the Futura Air Trek. The mesh is tensioned over a spring steel frame so the pack bows away from the back, which is why a 23 L day pack weighs 1,180 g -- heavy for the volume, and the direct cost of the airflow.

The women's-fit Futura, with a 38-48 cm back length against the standard 44-54 cm and shoulder straps shaped for a narrower chest. Same suspended Aircomfort mesh and included rain cover as the standard Futura, in a 21 L, 25 L and 30 L size run.

The Futura Pro sits between Deuter's day packs and its trekking line: 40 L with the same suspended Aircomfort mesh as the Futura, but VariClick five-stage back length adjustment, a separate bottom compartment and a lid section. It covers long day trips, hut tours and overnights where a full trekking pack is overkill.

The women's-fit Futura Pro, with a 35-56 cm VariClick range and hip fins carrying dual pockets. Deuter notes the back mesh extends the full length of the back to wrap smaller frames, which is a construction change rather than a shortened version of the standard pack.

The women's-fit Speed Lite Pro, with a 38-48 cm back length and hip fins carrying zipper pockets. It is the largest SL size in the line at 28 L and 740 g, and one of the few genuinely women's-specific fastpacking-style packs from a mainstream brand.

The AC Lite is the budget entry to Deuter's Aircomfort ventilation: the same suspended mesh and spring steel frame as the Futura, in cheaper fabrics and with a smaller 2 L hydration capacity. At $110 it is the least expensive way into the suspended-mesh back that defines the brand.

The women's-fit AC Lite, with a 38-48 cm back length and SL-specific harness geometry. Same suspended Aircomfort mesh, included rain cover and recycled fabric package as the standard AC Lite, in a 14 L and 22 L size run.

New for spring 2026, the Hikelite LT strips the Hikelite down to its essentials while keeping the full AirSpeed suspended-mesh backpanel and an included raincover. At 1.69 lb for 22 L and $110, in a line that starts at $95 for the 16 L, it is the cheapest way into Osprey's suspended-mesh suspension.

The women's-fit Manta, with the same 2.5 L Hydraulics LT reservoir, magnetic bite-valve attachment and AirSpeed suspended mesh in a women's-specific harness. At 3.28 lb it is marginally lighter than the men's Manta 24 and carries the same price.

The Nano is Gregory's simple day pack. At 17 oz and $80 it is the value option in this group, with tough 450D recycled polyester panels most packs at the price skip.

Now that the Bora and the Aerios 30 and 45 are gone, the Aerios 35 is the only Arc'teryx pack above 18 L still sold for hiking. It is a roll-top at 2 lb 8.9 oz in the regular size, built on an anti-barreling frame sheet with a removable 7000-series aluminum stay, and the roll-top adds up to 10 L over the nominal volume. Arc'teryx sells it in three torso lengths with interchangeable harnesses and hipbelts.

Hydration is built into the Rim Runner X30, CamelBak's step down from the Fourteener: 30 L of gear space plus a 2 L Crux reservoir in its own compartment, for $148 and 2.0 lb including the bladder. It gets the same Air Support ventilated back as the Fourteener and a ventilated hipbelt with cargo pockets. The 22 L size costs $116 and swaps that hipbelt for a removable webbing stability belt with a 1.5 L reservoir.

New for 2026, the Telatie 26 is Deuter's cheapest ventilated hiking daypack: 26 L, 720 g and $100, with the Airstripes foam-channel back rather than the suspended mesh of the Futura. There is no frame, so the 6-10 kg load rating rests on the padded hipbelt and the two foam profiles alone. A front J-zip opens the main compartment like a suitcase, which is unusual at this price in Deuter's range.

Women get the Trail 30 in a shorter cut as the Trail 28 SL: the same Delrin U-frame, Airstripes back, flat helmet-carry lid and included rain cover, cut for a 38-48 cm back and a 158-178 cm body. It saves 50 g and 2 L against the unisex pack at the same $155. The SL run also includes a 16 L and a 22 L.

Largest of the unisex sizes in Deuter's mid-range hiking daypack family, the Trail 30 sits between the frameless Telatie and the spring-steel Trail Pro. A flexible Delrin U-frame stiffens the Airstripes back, the lid is flat so a helmet can be strapped on top, and a removable rain cover is included. The line runs from 18 to 32 L, with the 32 EL built on a longer 48-58 cm back for tall hikers.

A round-profile spring steel frame sets the Trail Pro 36 apart at the top of Deuter's Trail line, replacing the Delrin U-frame of the smaller Trails and lifting the load rating to 6-10 kg. It is the Deuter alternative to a 35 L alpine daypack such as the Osprey Stratos 36 or Gregory Zulu 35, with a flat lid, mesh hip fins with carabiner loops and an included rain cover. A women's Trail Pro 34 SL is also made.

Exped's framed hiking daypack, the Skyline 30 puts a spring-steel U-frame under an Air Flow back, with a padded fixed hipbelt and an integrated rain cover. Exped sells it in two back lengths rather than with an adjustable harness, and rates it for 26 lb. The quoted weight is the S/M at the top of Exped's stated range; the M/L runs to 3 lb 6.5 oz.

For a simple frameless daypack, Exped offers the Summit Hike 25: 600D Cordura polyester with a 1,500 mm coating, an air-mesh back pad, a rain cover stowed in a bottom pocket and a hydration tube outlet. Exped quotes 18.3-22.6 oz depending on what is fitted, and a 22 lb load limit. The 15 L version costs $10 less.

The Arrio 22 sits a step below the Zulu LT in Gregory's daypack range: an alloy perimeter frame, a FreeSpan suspended mesh back and a zippered panel-loading main compartment at 1.48 lb. Gregory now sells this generation through its outlet, while the redesigned Arrio 20, 24 and 28 take its place in the main line.

Gregory's frameless hiking daypack is the Kiro 24: 1.54 lb, a perforated foam back instead of a suspended mesh, a wrap-over harness, and a rain cover stowed under the lid. It comes in 20, 24 and 28 L and lists at $119.95.

Near the bottom of Gregory's price list sits the Terros, a June 2026 addition: a frameless 25 L pack in heavy recycled polyester with a padded back, sold in 20, 25 and 28 L sizes from $89.95 to $109.95. Gregory files it under urban packs but writes it up as trail-comfortable, and the 20 lb rating and C0 DWR put it in line with its hiking daypacks.

Kelty's budget Asher line ends at the daypack-sized Asher 35, with an HDPE frame sheet behind an AMP-Flow ventilated back and a stated 10-25 lb carry range. At 1.75 lb for 35 L it is light for a framed pack with a hipbelt, and the 600D polyester oxford body is the same fabric as the 55 L backpacking version. A 24 L sibling uses the same design for $20 less.

Six Moon Designs makes only one daypack, the Wy'east: 34 L in 210D Robic at 20 oz, with a removable hydration sleeve (1.3 oz) and removable hipbelt (1.7 oz) both included in that figure. The EVA foam back pad doubles as a sit pad. It is sold in one size, in Robic at $185 or X-Pac VX21 at $280.

For everyday use in Dyneema, HMG offers the Daybreak 22: 22 L inside plus 4.5 L of stretch-mesh outside pockets, 19.2 oz, one size and a 20 lb ceiling. The heavier 5.1 and 5.9 laminates put it at the durable end of HMG's day range rather than the lightest.

Made in HMG's lightest DCH 3.8 laminate, the Elevate 22 is a frameless roll-top daypack, 17.7 oz in a medium and rated to 25 lb. Unlike the one-size Daybreak it comes in three torso lengths, with a removable hipbelt and a hydration port with a bladder hook.

Black Diamond's largest running pack, the Distance 22 was redesigned in January 2026 with the brand's SETT taped construction. It has a vest-style harness sized by chest circumference and weighs 400 g at the page spec. It works as a fastpack for long mountain days rather than a load-carrying hiking pack.

One size, 15 L and 540 g, the Pursuit 15 is the smallest pack in Black Diamond's 2026 Pursuit hiking line. It has a trimmed waist belt, an external hydration pocket and Z-pole storage for trekking poles.

Replacing the Pursuit 30, Black Diamond's January 2026 Pursuit 25 hiking daypack uses a harness derived from its Distance running packs. It holds 25 L, weighs 720 g at the published spec, and comes in two torso sizes. A dedicated hydration pouch with a reservoir clip is built in.

Black Diamond's 15 L running pack, redesigned in January 2026, comes in a women's-specific version as the Women's Distance 15. Its shoulder straps are shaped for shorter torsos, it comes in three sizes, and it weighs 360 g.

Listed in February 2026 in Black and Glacier, the Women's Distance 22 is the women's version of Black Diamond's redesigned 22 L running pack. It carries the same $229.95 price and a 420 g store weight.

Released in January 2026, the Women's Pursuit 15 is the women's-fit version of Black Diamond's 15 L Pursuit daypack. It shares the unisex pack's 540 g weight, price and feature set, including the external hydration pocket and pole storage.

Reshaped through the shoulders, chest and hips, the Women's Pursuit 25 is the women's-specific version of Black Diamond's 2026 Pursuit 25 daypack. Volume and features match the unisex pack. The S/M weighs 700 g and the M/L 740 g by the store's variant figures.

For everyday trail use, Gossamer Gear makes the Loris 25: 25 L, 19.5 oz with its removable SitLight pad, recycled Robic fabric, frameless, one size, $135. It has been in the range since September 2023.

Sized for day hikes, the Virga3 26 is a scaled-down Virga: 26 L, 1.26 lb, frameless, rated to 25 lb, in the same DWR-treated Robic as the 55 L version. A hydration port with a toggle is the main feature beyond the bag itself.

On a running-vest harness, the Aero 28 is a roll-top fastpack: 28 L inside plus 8.5 L of external pockets at 17.8 oz in Medium. It uses HMG's lightest laminate, DCH 3.8, with 100D Dyneema ripstop at the wear points.

HMG's minimal roll-top is the Summit 30: 30 L, 12.7 oz, one size, and a removable 3/4 in webbing belt. It is the cheapest HMG pack at $210 and works as a summit bag or a stripped-down day pack.

Alpine routes and scrambles are what HMG built the Vertex 32 daypack for: 32 L, 22.4 oz in Medium, and a removable foam panel in place of a frame. Its body mixes Dyneema Woven Composite 5.0 with DCH 5.1 and Gridstop, the abrasion-led recipe HMG uses on its climbing packs.

Mountainsmith's 2026 Zerk series includes the Zerk 20 UL as its daypack, using the same UHMWPE-grid Robic fabric as the larger packs. It holds 20 L (23 L extended) and carries a removable frame sheet, which is unusual at this size. It weighs 1 lb 12 oz complete or 1 lb 6 oz stripped.

A 38 L UltraGrid day and overnight pack, the Silverton 2300 got more hip-belt padding in its 1.1 revision. At $349 it ships with a removable 20 in frame sheet and weighs 2 lb 3 oz, or 1 lb 12 oz without the sheet. The same bag also mounts on Seek Outside's Revolution frame, sold together as the $734 Revo Suspension Kit.

Talon Pro 30 takes the Talon's fast-hiking layout and rebuilds it in Nanofly, a nylon and UHMWPE ripstop that resists abrasion at a lower weight. A wide bucket opening replaces the lid, a BioStretch harness and continuous lumbar-to-hipbelt wrap keep it stable on scrambles, and Osprey rates it for 15-25 lbs. It comes in S/M (28 L) and L/XL (30 L), with 20 L and 40 L siblings.

Talon Velocity 30 is a frameless pack with a running-vest-style harness, so the load splits between the chest and back rather than hanging from the shoulders. Two 500 ml soft-flask pockets, a zippered phone pocket and a helmet-capable front stretch pocket sit where they can be reached on the move. It closes with a top cinch rather than a lid and weighs about 2.4 lbs in S/M.

Tempest Pro 40 is the largest of Osprey's women's fast-and-light packs, sized big enough for an overnight with a compact kit. A LightWire peripheral frame and sliding-yoke torso adjustment carry 15-30 lbs, while the BioStretch harness and hipbelt move with the body. It weighs 2.9 lbs in WM/L (2.7 lbs in the 38 L WXS/S) and adds a floating lid that the 20 and 30 L versions lack.

The Zulu LT is the lightened version of Gregory's ventilated day pack, using the VaporSpan suspended panel that holds the pack off the back. At 2.3 lb for 24 L it trades some weight for airflow, which is the same bargain Osprey's Stratos makes at a similar price.
