Granite Gear Backpacks

A paddling trip through Quetico Provincial Park started it. Jeff Knight and Dan Cruikshank founded Granite Gear in 1986 in the Boundary Waters country between Minnesota and Ontario, and the company made canoe-country stuff sacks and portage gear before it made ultralight backpacks. That history shows in the packs: Robic nylon with a DWR finish, removable parts, and load ratings stated plainly for nearly every model.

Four families make up the range, and they differ more in frame than in volume. The Virga3 55 and Virga3 26 are frameless and rated to 25 lbs; the Virga3 55's hipbelt comes off for a stripped carry. The Crown3 60 is the convertible one: Granite Gear rates it at 25 lbs without its framesheet, 35 lbs with it, and 43 lbs with an optional aluminum stay, and its torso comes in three fixed sizes from 15 to 24 in. The Perimeter 50 and Perimeter 35 Women's Fit are conventional lidded packs with adjustable torsos and a 40 lb rating, and the Blaze 60 is the hauler, rated to 50 lbs at 3.0 lbs of pack weight. Women's Fit versions exist for the Blaze, Crown3 and Perimeter.

Independent testers found the Blaze 60's 50 lb rating holds, though its minimal framesheet rewards careful packing, and reviewers say the torso adjustment hardware takes an evening at home to dial in. Reviewers find the Crown3 60's 35 lb rating honest, and many owners run it stripped for weekends, though the lightly padded shoulder straps dig at full load. Its Re-Fit hipbelt adjusts from 26 to 42 in, a range fixed-belt cottage packs do not cover. On the Virga3 55, 55 liters invites packing past the 25 lb ceiling, beyond which the load lands on the shoulders.

Granite Gear's limited lifetime warranty covers the original owner against defects in materials or workmanship under normal recreational use, with repair or replacement at its option. As of October 2026 its own store had most of these packs at about half price while newer Crown3 S.I. ECO versions sold at full price, so check whether a model is being cleared before counting on it long term.
