The SL back range is 38-48 cm — a full 6 cm shorter at both ends — with pivoting ActiveFit straps shaped for a narrower chest rather than a cut-down men's harness. Volume drops 2 L but weight drops only 30 g, so it's a fit decision, not a weight one.

Is the ventilation worth it year-round?

The suspended mesh is class-leading in heat, but the advantage largely evaporates in cool weather while the 1,150 g weight penalty stays. Fair-weather hikers get the most from it; cold-season walkers may prefer something simpler and lighter.

What load is it comfortable with?

The 3-6 kg (7-13 lb) ceiling covers a standard day kit — water, lunch, layers — and not much more. Overloading a suspended-mesh daypack amplifies the leverage problem more than it would on a contact-panel pack.

Should I size up to the 25 L?

All three SL sizes have published weights and prices ($150 / 2.54 lbs, $170 / 2.67 lbs and $190 / 2.93 lbs), so the step up is a known quantity. If you carry bulky layers or camera gear, the 25 also absorbs the depth the suspension gap steals.
