About PackRanker
PackRanker compares 268 hiking and hunting backpacks from 42 brands — capacity, frame type, carry weight, torso fit and price — in one place, so you can narrow the field before you commit to something you'll carry for a week.
Why a pack site
Packs are the hardest piece of gear to shop for online. Two packs with the same stated litres can carry completely differently, the load rating a brand prints is optimistic more often than not, and the thing that actually decides whether you finish the trip comfortably — torso length — is the spec most listings bury. Add a market split between mainstream brands and cottage makers who sell direct and never appear on the big retail sites, and comparing anything means a dozen tabs. We put the specs that matter in one table and let you sort on them.
Litres, load rating, and torso length
Specifications come from each manufacturer's own published figures — capacity, weight, frame type, max load and torso range — and we record them as the brand states them rather than rounding or normalising across brands, because the differences in how brands measure are real and worth seeing.
The pros and cons on each pack come from long-form owner discussions in backpacking and hunting communities: what people report after a season of use rather than in the first week. Where a rating is shown, it is cited. Where we could not verify a number, we leave it out instead of guessing.
Who runs PackRanker
Two people, a spreadsheet, and no gear-testing operation behind it. Not one of these 268 packs has been on our scale, so a listed weight is the maker's stated weight for the stated size — which matters more than it sounds, because brands disagree about whether that figure includes the lid, the framesheet and the hipbelt, and a pack can shed half a pound in a footnote. Where a brand describes a torso range with a vague word instead of a measurement in inches, the column stays empty. Owner reports are marked as owner reports and are not averaged into a number.
How this is paid for, and what that doesn't buy
PackRanker earns a commission when you buy through some of the links here, at no cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. No brand pays to be listed, to rank higher, or to have a criticism removed — and a good number of the packs we rate most highly earn us nothing at all, because their makers sell direct and run no affiliate program. We would rather list them anyway.
