Durston Gear Backpacks

Durston Gear has 2 backpacks on PackRanker, priced from $279 to $299. The highest-rated Durston Gear pick is the Durston Kakwa 55 at 4.81★. Compare the full lineup below.

Durston sells its packs only from its own website, and has them sewn by contract factories that also make gear for Arc'teryx, MSR and Black Diamond. The X-Mid and X-Dome shelters are still most of the business: Dan Durston, who hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2014 and has walked Canada's Great Divide Trail twice, launched the X-Mid 1 in 2018, and the packs came after. The company is based in the Canadian Rockies, where Dan's wife T helps with product development, support and fulfillment.

Durston's warranty period is set per product, but its stated policy goes further: if a fault turns out to be Durston's after that period, it still makes it right, and it offers free repairs for accidental damage and wear, with discounted spare parts.

Packs are a short list: the Kakwa 55, a smaller Kakwa 40 and the Wapta 30, built for different hikers. The Kakwa 55 has a removable hollow aluminum frame and is rated to 45 lb, so it suits long food and water carries. The Wapta 30 is frameless and made from ALUULA Graflyte, a waterproof, heat-bonded UHMWPE laminate; Durston says it carries best under 25 lb and is meant for base weights of 10 lb or less. A hiker choosing between them is choosing a load range first and a volume second.

Kakwa drops sell out quickly and restocks can take months, so join the notification list early. The 2026 update reworked the hipbelt, which had drawn the most criticism, and added a second belt size, while torso length is still fixed by size. Measure before ordering.

Durston Wapta 30

ALUULA Graflyte, a fully UHMWPE laminate that very few packs under $300 use, is what Durston builds its frameless Wapta 30 fastpack from. The main body holds 30 L in the medium (28 L in small, 32 L in large) with roughly 16 L more in the external pockets, and the medium weighs 18.3 oz with its hipbelt or 13.6 oz stripped. Durston puts the comfortable ceiling below 25 lb and designs it around a sub-10 lb base weight.

Durston Gear backpacks: common questions

Does Durston repair packs that are damaged on trail?▾

Yes. Accidental damage and normal wear are not covered by the formal warranty, but Durston says it provides free repairs for all customers, along with repair advice and discounted spare parts.

Is the Wapta 30 enough pack for a thru-hike?▾

For a hiker with a base weight around 10 lb or less, Durston designed it for exactly that, but it is frameless and carries best under 25 lb. Long food or water carries push past that, which is where the framed Kakwa 55 and its 45 lb rating take over.
