Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight Carbon 60 vs Outdoor Vitals Carbon Evo 50

Quick take: The Outdoor Vitals Carbon Evo 50 costs $20.03 less; the Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight Carbon 60 carries more (64 vs 58 liters); the Outdoor Vitals Carbon Evo 50 is lighter (1.88 vs 1.97 lbs).

Which one to buy

Outdoor Vitals released the Carbon Evo 50 in February 2026 to sit between the CS40 Ultra and the Shadowlight Carbon 60, and against the Shadowlight it looks like the newer, better-specified pack for $20 less. Both use carbon stays and the same 100D Robic and 200D Spectra ripstop. The Carbon Evo adds a 210D Robic and 400D Spectra bottom where abrasion is worst, true load lifters, a foam back panel over its stays, a removable hydration sleeve and a stated 40 lb rating, and it weighs 1.88 lbs against the Shadowlight's 1.97 lbs. Its 58 L total is 6 L short of the Shadowlight's 64.

Both packs share woven fabric, so run a liner in real rain, but tape and thread repairs work. Carbon stays transfer load well yet can snap rather than bend if severely overloaded, and the Shadowlight's 64 L invites overpacking past what a sub-2 lb pack carries well.

Fit is fixed on both, and both size the hipbelt separately from XS to XL. The Shadowlight comes in Short, Regular and Tall, while the Carbon Evo is sold only in Short (17.7 in) and Regular (19.2 in), so a long torso has an option only in the Shadowlight; measure carefully against the chart and use the return window. The Shadowlight's edge is a longer time on the market, since the Carbon Evo has little durability record yet. For most buyers, the Carbon Evo is the one to order.

Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight Carbon 60

For hikers who want the most volume in this pair, need a Tall torso size, or prefer a design with more time on the market.

Outdoor Vitals Carbon Evo 50

A good match for most thru-hikers: $20 cheaper, slightly lighter, with load lifters, a hydration sleeve, a tougher bottom and torso lengths you can measure against.

Pros & cons

Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight Carbon 60

  • ✓64 L total with carbon stays at under 2 lb is a rare combination at this price.
  • ✓$300 undercuts the same brand's CS40 Ultra by $30 while adding 11 L.
  • ✓200D Spectra ripstop reinforces the wear areas without laminate's repair difficulty.
  • ✓100D Robic is a woven fabric, so field repairs with tape or thread actually work.
  • ✓Carbon stays are stiffer per gram than aluminium, giving good load transfer.
  • ✓The 49 L main body takes a bear canister plus a long food carry.
  • ✓Direct-to-consumer sales avoid the long lead times common to cottage brands.
  • ✓Hipbelt pockets included.
  • ✗Carbon stays can snap rather than bend if severely overloaded.
  • ✗No adjustable torso.
  • ✗Not waterproof, unlike the Ultra-fabric packs at similar prices.
  • ✗Outdoor Vitals has a shorter track record than the established cottage names.
  • ✗Limited retail presence for in-person fitting.
  • ✗64 L invites overpacking past what a sub-2 lb pack carries well.

Outdoor Vitals Carbon Evo 50

  • ✓A 40 lb rating at 1.88 lb is a strong load-to-weight ratio for a framed roll-top pack.
  • ✓Twin curved carbon stays plus true load lifters, a frame layout usually found on heavier packs.
  • ✓Mixed Robic and Spectra ripstop body with a 400D Spectra bottom where abrasion is worst.
  • ✓The maker names a BearVault 475 as fitting inside, so canister trips are planned for.
  • ✓Two zippered hipbelt pockets and a removable hydration sleeve come standard.
  • ✓Hipbelt sizes run XS to XL independently of the two torso lengths.
  • ✗Only Short and Regular torsos are sold, although the page lists a Tall 21 in spec.
  • ✗No adjustable torso, so between-size hikers have to pick one of two fixed lengths.
  • ✗Raincover is sold separately.
  • ✗The $251.97 member figure is a rebate price; the regular price is $279.97.
  • ✗Foam back panel against the body, not a suspended mesh back.
  • ✗New in February 2026, so there is little long-term durability record yet.

Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight Carbon 60 vs Outdoor Vitals Carbon Evo 50: common questions

Is the Shadowlight Carbon 60 bigger than the Carbon Evo 50?▾

By 6 L. The Carbon Evo 50 holds 58 L in total, 47 L inside the roll top plus about 11 L in external pockets, against the Shadowlight's 64 L.

Which one has a better frame?▾

The Carbon Evo 50 adds true load lifters to its two curved carbon stays, with a foam back panel over them, and carries a stated 40 lb rating. The Shadowlight's carbon stays transfer load well, but it shouldn't be treated as a hauler.

Are both packs waterproof?▾

Neither is. Both use woven Robic and Spectra ripstop, so run a liner in real rain. The upside is that tape and thread repairs work on woven nylon.
